Questions 1 10 You will hear a series of five short extracts. For each extract there are two questions. Circle the correct letter A, B or C. Before we start, here is an example. The end of term s coming up and it s time to relax. But we know that money can be a problem so, if you re in full time education, we can help! The UniTrip card will give you a bundle of savings whether you re grabbing a bite to eat, catching a movie, or packing your clothes into a suitcase to get out of the classroom, away from your family for a while and fly round the world. You can really start enjoying life! Just fill in the form on our website at [fade] The advertisement is for students, so there is a circle around the letter C. The UniTrip card would be useful to someone who wants to book tickets for a holiday, so there is a circle around the letter A. Pause 2" You now have 30 seconds to look at Questions Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. Extract 1 V 1 This spring the literature Festival should be well-worth going to. It will feature a play that focuses on ancient history, and since we ve just finished reading about this, I thought you d be keen to go along. The venue has been changed it was going to be at the new theatre but it ll take place at the old one, instead. Although the actors are local, they are Page 3 of 14

going to perform in English. Another event I hope you can go to is a lecture by our school principal who will give a brief introduction to the whole festival. I m sure it ll increase your appreciation of the play, and you will definitely enjoy it. Tickets are on sale now at City Centre. See me if you ve got any questions. Repeat from to Pause 10 Extract 2 V 2 When I was still a student, I really wanted to work in the entertainment business. I got a part-time job working at a large cinema in town. Some days were harder than others, but I got used to the routine and the long hours. What I really got out of it was getting to know the other staff who worked there. I only stayed there for a month though. My boss wasn t very happy about that, especially as he d trained me to get things right I d made quite a mess of a few things when I d started. Anyway, I got offered another position with a higher salary so it wasn t really a difficult choice for me to make. Repeat from to Pause 10 Extract 3 V 3 Listen carefully! I ve got to tell you some things about the class trip tomorrow. As planned, we ll meet at 9 in the parking area outside the sports hall, so we can drive there in Page 4 of 14

groups. I handed out the directions to the museum yesterday, so if you didn t get one, see me after class. You ll find that the exhibition complements our study of modern art. While you re there, choose one of the pieces and make a copy of it in your notepads. Take plenty of notes, too you ll need them to complete your assignment, which you should hand in at the end of the week. But what we re going to do now is hear part of a lecture about art from the 1950s up to the turn of the century. Repeat from to Pause 10 Extract 4 V 4 I can t believe it! This year I only have three classes. It s incredible! I feel like I ll never get through everything because I ve got lots of research to do and essay deadlines to meet. Unlike last year, when I seemed to be doing experiments most of the time. Anyway, yesterday our teacher showed us a clip from a science documentary. It was quite complicated stuff, so I ll definitely have to go and do some extra work to make a few things clearer. But it did give me some thoughts on how to finish my project. We all thought seeing a film would be an easy way to spend a lesson and it turned out to be exactly the opposite..[fade] Repeat from to Pause 10 Extract 5 Page 5 of 14

V 5 I never did particularly well when it came to English! Maybe it wasn t her fault, but I really didn t get on with my first teacher. It s a shame because I was really starting to get into doing exercises on things like verbs and tenses. And even if I did learn English, there were no English-speaking people around me, so why learn it! Though, I started feeling a bit differently about it later on. In my first job, I had to speak English on the phone every day, which wasn t easy, but fortunately someone in my team was really supportive and inspired me to improve. The woman who lived next door was from London so I started having classes with her and my former classmate joined us! Repeat from to Now turn to Part 2. Part 2 Questions You will hear an interview with a man called Jack Furness, who is a bungee jumping instructor. Complete the sentences using up to three words or a number. Before we start, here is an example. Here in the studio with me is Jack Furness who is a bungee jumping instructor. Jack is here to talk to us about what he does. It seems like an easy job, is that right? Well, it s certainly an exciting one, but I wouldn t say it s easy. Actually all instructors are very highly trained and have completed both practical and written assessments. They re all professionals, you know. Page 6 of 14

Jack Furness says that all instructors are well-prepared and have done written and practical exams, so practical is written in the space. Pause 2" You have 30 seconds to look at Questions Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. They are all professionals, you know. I m sure you all are. Can you tell us what is the most exciting jump you can do? Well, I ve done jumps in all sorts of places all over the world. For example, I did a great one over a beach in Mexico once. There weren t any activities at the time that would ve made it too dangerous. But the one that I ll never forget was over a volcano - not a live one of course! And it s not one that I would recommend for beginners. That sounds amazing! But I wouldn t be brave enough to do that. What sort of things can you jump from? Well, beginners usually jump from something like a bridge because it s much easier to jump from. And that s actually what I did most recently. But my favourite jumps are from things that can move, rather than a fixed construction like a helicopter or even a hot air balloon. Page 7 of 14

That would only be for experienced jumpers, right? Yes of course. You need to be quite good to do that. So tell us about the equipment - how safe is it? Well, there is a backup system with the ropes, so there s one tied to your ankles as well as your waist. Lots of people think that it s like parachuting gear, but actually it s been developed from climbing, instead. And all the ropes are tested using loads much heavier than any jumper so it s very safe. That sounds quite reassuring. So if I wanted to do a jump at your club, what would I have to do? Before anyone can do a jump, they need to be weighed. We have to know exactly how heavy they are so we can fit the right length of rope to them. But before anything else, we ask jumpers to sign a form. It s to say that you are aware of the risks involved and that you don t have any health problems. So how long does a jump last? mmmmm.the actual jump only takes a few minutes, but it depends on how many times you want to bounce up and down. All in all, the procedure is about an hour from start to finish. Oh that s longer than I thought. Ok Jack, tell us what happens after the jump? Well, we ve got a team on the ground who detach the jumper from their rope then bring them back to base. We give a certificate to all the people who get through the experience. That s nice to keep, but most people are much more excited about being able to take home a video of their jump. That costs extra of course, so that s optional. That sounds great. And talking of costs, is it expensive to do a jump? It s not so bad. At our club one jump is 25, but if you want to jump again on the same day it ll only cost you 15. And remember that first you have to register as a club member and be insured. That s for one year. Well Jack, thank you very much for coming and talking to us today. Enjoy your jumping! Page 8 of 14

Pause 10 Repeat from to Now turn to Part 3. Part 3 Questions You will hear a final-year student called Ali telling new students about college life. Circle the correct letter A, B or C. Before we start, here is an example. V8 My name s Ali and I m here to tell you about college. I m in my last year now. I ve had a great time here, and I hope you all will too when you finish high school at the end of the year. Going to college for the first time is a huge milestone in your life. Let me share my experience with you and give you some advice. The speaker is talking about his experience relating to the whole time he was at college, so there is a circle around the letter A. Pause 2" You have 30 seconds to look at questions Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. Page 9 of 14

V8 My name s Ali and I m here to tell you about college. I m in my last year now. I ve had a great time here, and I hope you all will, too, when you finish high school at the end of the year. Going to college for the first time is a huge milestone in your life. Let me share my experience with you and give you some advice. First of all, I had no idea how much I d have to read and study. The good thing is that I ve always preferred working on my own. That s something you have to get used to at college. My mom and dad prepared me quite well for college life, too. What I realised was that it wasn t easy keeping to schedule and meeting deadlines. Now, an important question to ask yourself is if you re going to college to get an education, or to socialize. Well, you can have both if you want to. What I d really recommend is finding a place to stay that s as near to college as possible, and preferably in a college building. Then you won t have any problems meeting up with your classmates after lectures. One of your biggest expenses will be books. You can reduce this cost if you go online, though it can be expensive to register for some academic websites. I suggest you go to a place where you can pick up used copies ones which students bought last year and don t need anymore. If someone offers to lend you a copy, just remember you have to give it back so you can t refer to it later. It s important to make friends when you start college. When I arrived I got involved in some college groups music was my favourite. I also took part in all sorts of meetings and discussions and I learnt all sorts of things. In fact I was so busy that I hardly had time to do any exercise, but it was at the sports hall that I got to know a few people really well. Something to beware of is getting stressed. What you should do is to think carefully about your diet, and avoid anything that might make you put on weight. Of course you can do more sport if this happens. I truly believe that nothing will be better than going to bed early every night, but that depends on how many hours you need. Most colleges offer some optional sessions at the start of the first year, on study skills, for example. The one I did covered things like how to get the most of the library facilities, ways of keeping all your work in order and how to note down the main ideas in a long lecture. It was this last thing which I got the most out of. I really recommend doing a course like this. Something everyone finds challenging at first is essay writing. Although I always had a problem with recording the details of the journals and books I used, the Page 10 of 14

majority of my classmates struggled with expressing their ideas in an original way. I never had a problem with that, but it s important to go over your work before you hand it in. Finally, although starting college can be hard, leaving can be, too. I m graduating next week. I m not sure yet what I ll say in my speech, but I ll come up with something. I ve got a few interviews lined up, but some of my classmates are really nervous about finding work. What I know is that I m not looking forward to leaving behind people I ve got to know well here. But you ve all got lots of time before you have to think about these things. I hope you ll have a good time when you start college soon. Pause 10 Repeat from to Now turn to Part 4. Part 4 Questions You will hear a radio interview with a driving instructor, who is talking about his work. Complete the notes using one word or a number. Before we start, here is an example. Welcome back to the Job Show, our weekly programme on careers. With me in the studio today I ve got John Dixon, who s a driving instructor. John, tell us about your work. Well, basically, I teach people how to drive. I ve been doing it for about seven years now before this, I was a manager for quite a long time. I wanted to escape office life and do something different, so I decided to retrain. Page 11 of 14

John s previous job was a manager, so manager has been written in the space. Pause 2" You have 30 seconds to look at questions Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. So, how long does it take to become a driving instructor? Well, there re several stages. I d expected to have to do a practical test straight off, but in fact the first step tests theory, instead. You have to pass this before you can progress to the second stage. Then, once you ve got that far, you have to take a road driving test. Does that mean they assess you driving in a range of vehicles? Actually, it s a variety of conditions that they need to see you can cope with for example, driving in the dark, when the light s poor at sunset, at rush hour, and so on. I see. And is it quite hard to get through that part? It is they re very strict in the marking. If you don t pass first time, you can try two more times, but you only have three attempts. Luckily, I managed to pass first time! That s good to hear. And so were you qualified at this point? No, there s a third stage, too. This part is focused on whether you can get Page 12 of 14

instructions across to the person you re teaching lots of people think it s ok to give them advice or suggestions, but actually you just need to be able to say very clearly what they must or must not do. So, the test involves taking a learner out and telling them how to do a particular move. Things like reversing, for example that s something I remember I found really difficult when I was a learner years ago! But actually it s parking that most people struggle with. So how does that stage of the test work because if you haven t qualified yet, how can you take a learner out on the road? Do you do the test with another trainee instructor, instead? Ah, well, in fact the examiner plays the part of the person who s learning. Yes, of course. That makes sense. So, tell us a bit about what it takes to become an instructor. What sort of person do you need to be? Well, you wouldn t like it if you were nervous, that s for sure. It s essential to have plenty of patience though and of course to know everything there is to know about driving regulations, things like that. So, once you d qualified, did you start working very quickly? Actually it took me a few weeks for my insurance to be arranged you can t work without that but the paperwork I had to fill in and send off to the DSA that s the Driving Standards Agency in the UK was very straightforward. Then I decided I wanted to be self-employed, so I can be my own boss and work the hours I want to. So I set up a company. One of the hardest things for me was deciding what to call it. My wife suggested Wheels, and I was quite tempted just to name it Dixon, but in the end I went for Speed, which my daughter came up with. And do you have many students now? I do and I ve started offering a new course for experienced drivers, so quite a few of my clients are advanced learners now. But the majority are beginners, and I always enjoy seeing them gain confidence as they learn a skill that could in effect make a huge difference to their lives. John, thank you very much for talking to us today. Thank you. Page 13 of 14

Pause 10 Repeat from to Narrator [We have now come to the end of the test. You now have 5 minutes to look over your answers. I will remind you when there is one minute left. (Pause for 4 minutes) You now have 1 minute left. That is the end of the Listening Test.] Page 14 of 14
